Another name for this type of ring is the chastity ring or the promise ring. They are usually engraved with sayings that help encourage and remind the wearer of the commitment the he made. Sayings like, “True Love Waits,” and “One Life One Love,” are the usual engravings. The whole practice of wearing purity rings came about in the 1990′s. It was used as a way to discourage young people from premarital sex. Even after two decades have passed, purity or chastity rings are still well known and used.
Promise rings are usually worn in the left hand of the user. This signifies that the person wearing the ring has made a commitment to himself and God that he will not desecrate his body by engaging in sex before marriage. Some people prefer to wear them as a necklace instead of a ring. You may not be able to see a hint of it in movies and general society, but every day the concept of wearing purity rings is gaining ground. There are teens who are making a choice to be different from their peers, thus, they feel that this is a good way to differentiate themselves; by not giving in to temptation.
